Yesterday, September 23rd, Facebook says it suffered is worst hiccup in four years.  It has been estimated that over 130 million people were unable to sign on to the site where the issue started some time at 7pm BST and lasted for well over 2 hours.

Facebook have pointed the finger at an issue with the software which resulted in Facebook being shut down affecting millions of UK users.
